નવરાત્રી વ્રત

ચૈત્ર માસની શુક્લ પક્ષ(સુદ)ના પડવેથી નોમ સુધી તેમજ આસો માસના શુકલ પક્ષ (સુદ)ના પડવેથી નૌમ સુધી નવરાત્રી મનાવવામાં આવે છે. આમ વર્ષમાં બે વખત નવરાત્રી મનાવવામાં આવે છે. આમાં નવગૌરી(નવદુર્ગા)નું પૂજન-અર્ચન, ઘટસ્થાપન, વ્રત, ગરબા આદિ દ્વારા ઉત્સવ ઉજવવામાં આવે છે.

નવદુર્ગાનાં નવ સ્વરૂપો છે. પ્રથમ સ્વરૂપ શૈલપુત્રીનું છે. તેનું પૂજન-અર્ચન પ્રથમ દિવસ, બીજા દિવસે બીજું સ્વરૂપ બ્રહ્મચારિણીનું, ત્રીજા દિવસે ત્રીજું સ્વરૂપ ચન્દ્રઘંટાનું, ચોથે દિવસે ચોથું સ્વરૂપ કૃષ્માંડાનું, પાંચમા દિવસે પાંચમું સ્વરૂપ સ્કન્દમાતાનું, છઠ્ઠા દિવસે છઠ્ઠું સ્વરૂપ કાત્યાયનીનું, સાતમા દિવસે સાતમું સ્વરૂપ કાલરાત્રિનું, આઠમા દિવસે આઠમું સ્વરૂપ સિદ્ધિદાયિનીનું નવમા દિવસે નવમું સ્વરૂપ મહાગૌરીનું પૂજન- અર્ચન થાય છે. કેટલાક અંબામાનું પૂર્જન-અર્ચન કરે છે.

આ વ્રત કરનાર નવદુર્ગા (જગદંબા), અંબાજી અથવા પોતાની કુળદેવીની સ્થાપના કરે છે. જ્યાં એકમના દિવસે કુળદેવીની સ્થાપના કરવાની હોય છે એ સ્થાન પર માટી અને છાણનું લીંપણ કરવું. ત્યાં એક પાટલા પર લાલ વસ્ત્ર પાથરી, એના ઉપર ચોખા મૂક્યા બાદ એના ઉપર કુળદેવીની મૂર્તિ કે છબીની સ્થાપના કરવી. પછી નવે દિવસ સુધી અખંડ દીવો રાખી શકાય છે. સ્થાપનાની સામે માટીની ચોરસ વેદી બનાવી જવારા વાવવા. દરરોજ પ્રાતઃકાળે ફળદેવીનું પૂજન કરવું. સાંજે આરતી થાળ કરવા. જવારાની પણ પૂત્ર કરણીન વ્રતકથા વાંચ્યા બાદ એકટાણું કરવું. અંતિમ દિવસે કરવી- હોમ, કુમારિકા પૂજન કરવા. પરંતુ -વ્રત કરનારે માત્ર કુળદેવી પૂજન અને ઘટ (કળશ) પૂજન જ કરવું તેમજ વ્રતકથા વાંચવી.

રામનગરમાં શિવશંકર નામનો બ્રાહ્મણ રહેતો હતો. તે મા દુર્ગાનો ભક્ત હતો. તેને પુત્રી હતી. તેનું નામ સુમતિ હતું. તે પણ પિતાજીની જેમ પ્રતિદિન મા દુર્ગાની પૂજા કરતી.

એક દિવસ સુમતિ પોતાની સખીઓ સાથે રમવા ગઈ અને ભગવતીનું પૂજન કરવાનું ચૂકી ગઈ. જેથી તેના પિતા ક્રોધે ભરાયા અને તેને કહેવા લાગ્યા : “હુ તને કોઈ કોઢિયા સાથે પરણાવીશ.”

પિતાનાં આ વચન સાંભળી સુમતિ બોલી : “હે પિતાજી! હું આપની કન્યા છું અને આપને આધીન છું. તમારી ઇચ્છા હોય ત્યાં મારો વિવાહ કરી શકો છો. મારા ભાગ્યમાં તેમ નિર્માણ થયું હશે.”

પોતાની પુત્રીનાં આવાં વચન સાંભળી બ્રાહ્મણ અધિક ક્રોધ ભરાયો અને તેણે એ કન્યાનાં લગ્ન એક નિર્ધન કોઢિયા સાથે કરી દીધાં અને પછી તેને રવાના કરી દીધી.

લગ્ન થયાં પછી સુમતિ અને તેનો પતિ નજીકના એક વનમાં ચાલ્યાં ગયાં. ત્યોં તેઓ એક ઝૂંપડી બાંધીને રહેવાં લાગ્યાં. ત્યાં સુમતિ ભગવતીના પૂજા-પાઠ કરવા લાગી. તે કષ્ટથી દિવસો વિતાવતી હતી. ત્યાં એક દિવસે ભગવતીએ પ્રગટ થઈ તેને દર્શન આપ્યાં અને કોઈ વરદાન માગવા કહ્યું.

આથી બ્રાહ્મણી ઘણી ખુશી થઈ અને ભગવતીના પગમાં પડી ચોધાર આંસુએ રડવા લાગી અને માતાજીને પૂછ્યું : “આપ કોણ છો અને મારા ઉપર શા કારણથી પ્રસન્ન થયાં છો તે કૃપા કરીને મને કહો.”

બ્રાહ્મણીનાં વચન સાંભળી માતાજી બોલ્યાં : “હું આદ્યશક્તિ છું. હું તારાં પૂર્વજન્મના પુણ્યના પ્રભાવથી પ્રસન્ન છું. તને તારા પૂર્વજન્મની વિગત જણાવું છું તે તું સાંભળ. તું પૂર્વજન્મમાં એક ભીલની પતિવ્રતા સ્ત્રી હતી. એક દિવસે તારા પતિ ભીલે ચોરી કરી. ચોરી કરવાના કારણે તમને બંનેને સૈનિકોએ પકડી દીધાં ને કારાગૃહમાં કેદ કરી દીધાં. સૈનિકોએ તમને ભોજન પણ ન આપ્યું. આ રીતે નવરાત્રીના દિવસોમાં તમે ન તો કાંઈ ખાધું, ન તો જળ પીધું. આમ નવ દિવસ સુધી તમે ભૂખે-તરસે પડયાં રહ્યાં. આથી અજાણતાં પણ તમારાથી નવરાત્રીના નવ દિવસનું વ્રત થઈ ગયું.

હે બ્રાહ્મણી ! એ દિવસોમાં જે વ્રત થયું તેના પ્રભાવથી પ્રસન્ન થઈને તને મનોવાંછિત ફળ આપવા આવી છું. તારી ઇચ્છા હોય તે તું માંગ.”

માતાજીનાં વચન સાંભળી બ્રાહ્મણી બોલી: “જો આપ મારા ઉપર પ્રસન્ન થયાં હો તો કૃપા કરીને તમે મારા પતિનો કોઢ દૂર કરો.”

આ સાંભળી માતાજી બોલ્યાં : “એ દિવસોમાં તેં અજાણતાં જે વ્રત કર્યું હતું, એ વ્રતના એક દિવસનું પુણ્ય તારા પતિનો કોઢ દૂર કરવા માટે અર્પણ કર. આના પ્રભાવથી તારા પતિનો કોઢ દૂર થશે.”

બ્રાહ્મણીએ તરત એક દિવસનું પુણ્ય અર્પણ કરવાનો સંકલ્પ કરતા તેનો પતિ કોઢથી મુક્ત થઈ ગયો અને સુંદર શરીરવાળો બની ગયો.

આ જોઈ બ્રાહ્મણી ખુશ અને આનંદિત થઈને બોલી: “હે મા! મારા જેવા ઘણા જીવો દુ:ખી અને કષ્ટથી પીડાયેલા હોય છે. તેઓ પણ દુ:ખ અને કષ્ટથી રાહત પામે તેવો કોઈ માર્ગ બતાવો.”

ત્યારે માતાજી બોલ્યાં : “હે બ્રાહ્મણી ! જે કોઈ આ નવરાત્રીનું વ્રત કરે છે, તેને સુખ ને સંપત્તિમાં વૃદ્ધિ થાય છે. દુ:ખ-દારિદ્રય દૂર થાય છે. શત્રુનો સંહાર થાય છે. મહાનમાં મહાન પાપી પણ બધાં પાપોથી મુક્ત બને છે. તેના સફળ મનોરથ સિદ્ધ થાય છે.” આટલું કહી માતાજી અદશ્ય થઈ ગયાં. ત્યાર પછી બ્રાહ્મણ અને બ્રાહ્મણી દર નવરાત્રીએ જગદંબાનું પૂજન-અર્ચન કરવા લાગ્યાં. તેના પ્રતાપે તેઓ સુખી અને સમૃદ્ધિવાન બન્યો.

હે દેવી દુર્ગા ! તમે જેમ સુમતિ-તે ફળ્યા એવા વત કરનાર સૌને ફળજો.
