ધર્મરાજાએ આ એકાદશી વિશે પૂછતાં શ્રીકૃષ્ણે કહ્યું : “અષાઢ સુદ એકાદશીને દેવશયની એકાદશી કહેવામાં આવે છે અથવા દેવપોઢી એકાદશી પણ કહેવાય છે.

આ એકાદશીથી ચાતુર્માસનો પ્રારંભ થાય છે. આ દિવસે જગતપિતા ભગવાનને પોઢાડવામાં આવે છે અને તુલા સંક્રાંતિની એકાદશીના દિવસે જગાડવા પડે છે. દેવશયની એકાદશીને દિવસે ઉપવાસ કરીને ચાતુર્માસના સંકલ્પ સાથે ભગવાન વિષ્ણુની પ્રતિમાની સ્થાપના કરવી. એક સારા ગાદી-તકિયા પર ભગવાનને સુવડાવવા તેમજ વેદ-પુરાણોના જાણકાર વિદ્વાન બ્રાહ્મણ પાસે પ્રભુને પંચામૃતથી સ્નાન કરાવવું. પછી ભગવાનને સુગંધિત ચંદન લગાડીને ફૂલ, ધૂપ અને દીવાથી પૂજવા. પછી પ્રભુને વંદન કરી પ્રાર્થના કરવી: “હે લક્ષ્મીપતિ ! આપ લક્ષ્મી સહિત શયન કરો. આપ શયન કરશો એટલે સમગ્ર જગત શયન કરશે.’ આ રીતે પ્રાર્થના કરી બાજોઠ પર ભગવાનની સ્થાપના કરવી. ચાતુર્માસ સુધી લીધેલા નિયમોનો ત્યાગ ન કરવો.

પૂર્વકાળમાં સૂર્યવંશમાં માંધાતા નામે એક પ્રતાપી રાજા થયો હતો. આ રાજા ન્યાય અને નીતિથી પ્રજાનું પાલન કરતો હતો. તેના રાજ્યમાં કોઈ આધિ—વ્યાધિ કે ઉપાધિથી પીડાતું નહોતું. પ્રજા બધી રીતે સુખી હતી. આ રીતે તેણે ઘણાં વર્ષોં સુધી રાજય કર્યું. અચાનક તેના રાજ્યમાં લાગલગાટ ત્રણ વર્ષ સુધી વરસાદ ન પડયો, પરિણામે દુષ્કાળ પડ્યો. પ્રજા ખૂબ જ દુ:ખી થઈ ગઈ. આખા દેશમાં અનાજના સાંસા પડવા માંડ્યા. પ્રજાને દુ:ખથી પીડાતી જોઈ રાજા પણ દુ:ખી રહેવા લાગ્યો. તે વિચારવા લાગ્યો કે ‘આમાં મારો જ કાંઈ અપરાધ હોવો જોઈએ, નહિતર આ રીતે પ્રજા પર દુઃખ આવે નહિ.’

એક દિવસ રાજા પ્રધાનને લઈ આ વાતના નિવારણ અર્થે મહર્ષિ અંગિરસને આશ્રમે ગયો. રાજાએ ઋષિને કહ્યું : “હું મારી પ્રજાનું પુત્રની જેમ પાલન કરું છું, છતાંય મારા રાજ્યમાં વરસાદ કેમ થયો નહિ? આપ મારી આ શંકાનું નિવારણ કરો.”

ઋષિએ કહ્યું: “હે રાજન્ ! આ માટે તું અષાઢ મહિનાની સુદ અગિયારશ, જે દેવપોઢી એકાદશીના નામે ઓળખાય છે, તેનું વ્રત કર. આ એકાદશી બધા મનોરથ પૂર્ણ કરનારી અને બધા ઉપદ્રવોને શાંત પાડનારી છે. આ એકાદશીનું તું વિધિપૂર્વક વ્રત કર.”

રાજા ઋષિને પ્રણામ કરી પોતાના નગરમાં પાછા ફર્યો. તેણે અષાઢ મહિનો આવતાં દેવપોઢી એકાદશીનું શ્રદ્ધાપૂર્વક વ્રત કર્યું અને ખૂબ જ દાન-પુણ્ય કર્યાં, પરિણામે તેના રાજ્યમાં પુષ્કળ વરસાદ થયો અને રાજ્યમાં સર્વત્ર આનંદ આનંદ છવાઈ ગયો. આ વ્રતનું માહાત્મ્ય વાંચનાર અથવા સાંભળનાર સર્વ પાપોમાંથી મુક્ત બને છે.
