એક દિવસ આ બ્રાહ્મણને આંગણે એક સાધુ મહારાજ ભિક્ષા અર્થે આવ્યા. સાતેય વહુઓ તે બ્રાહ્મણને ભિક્ષા આપવા ગઈ, એટલે એ બ્રાહ્મણે તેમને ‘અખંડ સૌભાગ્યવતી’ના આશીર્વાદ આપ્યા. પછી ચિત્રવર્માની પુત્રી ધનલક્ષ્મીએ તે સાધુ મહારાજને ભિક્ષા આપી, એટલે મહારાજે તેને ‘ધર્મવતી થા’ એવા આશીર્વાદ આપ્યા.
મહારાજની બાજુમાં ઊભેલ જયાવતીએ આ સાંભળ્યું. તેમણે મહારાજને કહ્યું: “હે મહાત્મન્ ! તમે મારી વહુઓને ‘અખંડ સૌગ્યવતી’ એવા આશીર્વાદ આપ્યા, જ્યારે મારી દીકરીને તમે ‘ધર્મવતી થા’ એવા આશીર્વાદ આપ્યા. આનું કારણ શું ?”
સાધુ મહારાજે કહ્યું : “હે બહેન ! તમે જ્યારે આ દીકરીનાં લગ્ન કરશો અને સપ્તપદીનો વિધિ થતી હશે ત્યારે તમારો જમાઈ મૃત્યુ પામશે. આથી મેં તેને ‘ધર્મવતી થા’ એવા આશીર્વાદ આપ્યા.
સાધુ મહારાજની આવી વાત સાંભળી માતા જયાવતી તો હેબતાઈ ગઈ. તેણે સાધુ મહારાજને આ માટેનો કોઈ ઉપાય દર્શાવવા વિનંતી કરી.
સાધુ મહારાજે કહ્યું : “ સિંહલદ્વીપમાં સોમા નામની એક ધોબણ છે. જો તમારી દીકરી તેની સેવા કરે અને સોમા તેનાં લગ્નમાં હાજર રહે, તો તમારી દીકરી વિધવા થતી બચી જાય.” આમ કહી સાધુ મહારાજ ચાલ્યા ગયા.
જયાવતીએ આ વાત પોતાના પતિને કરી. ચિત્રવર્માએ પોતાના સાતેય પુત્રોને ભેગા કરી ધનલક્ષ્મીની વાત જણાવી. મોટા છએ છોકરાઓ ચૂપ રહ્યા, પણ સૌથી નાનો પુત્ર પોતાની બહેનને સિંહલદ્વીપ લઈ જવા તૈયાર થયો. બંને ભાઈ-બહેન સિંહલદ્વીપ જવા ઊપડ્યાં.
બંને ભાઈ-બહેન અનેક મુશ્કેલીઓ વેઠતાં વેઠતાં સમુદ્રકાંઠે આવી પહોંચ્યાં. હવે તેઓ વિચારવા લાગ્યા કે ‘સમુદ્ર ઓળંગવો શી રીતે ?’
તેઓ એક ઝાડ નીચે બેઠાં બેઠાં વિચારવા લાગ્યાં. આ ઝાડ ઉપર એક ગીધ રહેતું હતું. તે ચિંતાગ્રસ્ત ભાઈ-બહેનને જોઈ નીચે ઊતર્યું અને તેમની પાસે ગયું. પછી બોલ્યું : “હે માનવીઓ! તમે આમ સમુદ્રકાંઠે ચિંતાગ્રસ્ત બેઠેલાં કેમ જણાઓ છો ?” ત્યારે ભાઈ-બહેને બધી હકીકત જણાવી.
